Whirlpool tubs use jets of water to provide luxury massage or to soothe aching muscles. Even the most basic tub will be a dramatic improvement over a standard bathtub.
Size and Installation
There is a very wide range of standard whirlpool sizes between 5 and 7 feet in length. Carefully check dimensions to ensure that the model you like will fit in your bathroom.
Upgrading to a whirlpool is not a simple matter of removing your old tub and replacing it. You will need to re-arrange your plumbing to meet the requirements of the whirlpool tub. You will need to install a special electrical circuit for the pumps and heaters.
The Whirlpool Tub
The standard whirlpool tub has jets set in the sides to deliver massaging water against your body. The jets can be adjusted for angle and power. Most whirlpool tubs are shaped for reclining comfort, not for sitting in like a spa bath.
The Air Bath
An air bath provides a gentler form of massage. The air is pumped through jets in the bottom of the tub.
Combination Tubs
Some whirlpool baths have massaging jets and also incorporate air jets in the bottom.
Although relatively noisy (because of the pumps), whirlpool tubs are well worth the effort to install them. They are also easy to maintain as they are emptied after every use.
