If you are adding tile to any room in your home, you will need to know how to estimate the correct amount to complete the project. Whether you are adding tile to the floor or walls, the process is the same.
Measure
The first thing you will need to do, regardless of whether it is the floor or the wall, is to measure the width and the length of the entire area.
Add-Up
Once you have the appropriate measurements, multiply the width and length together for the total square inches; divide by 144 to get the total square feet of the area to tile.
Error Margin
You will need to add up to 10 percent to account for error or breakage of tiles, even more if you are working in an area that will require a lot of cutting of tiles or rounded edges.
Trim
There are basically 3 types of trim to think about: v-caps, bullnose and quarter rounds. No matter what type you use, the measurement should be linear.
Special Considerations
You will need to consider the following special conditions, which may change the estimated amount:
- Tile Size
- Layout of Area
- Designs and Patterns
- Shape and Configuration of the Wall/Floor
